Two UR students killed in crash

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Flags are flying at half staff tonight at the University of Richmond as news of the death of 2 of the university's very own spread throughout the campus. Paige and Jamie Malone were killed after their car crashed into a tree while they were on their way to work in Long Island, New York.

"Pretty sad," said student, Ryan Erickson-Kulas. "I know a girl who's in a sorority with them and I know all the sorority members were pretty upset last night."

Not much is left of their car after the crash. Jaime had graduated U of R this past May, her sister Paige was a junior. Both were very active at school and even throughout the City of Richmond. While any death is a tragedy, campus leaders are feeling this serious loss.

"We do want to express our sincere sympathy to the family which I know must feel this loss more acutely than those of us who had Jamie and Paige here for a short time," Brian Eckert.

To help students on campus cope with the student's death, counselors were on hand at Cannon Chapel Friday. While many students might not have even known the 2 girls, the university has lost 2 members of its family.

"You don't really expect something like this to happen," Erickson-Kulas. "I mean, I didn't know the 2 young ladies but just kind of sadness for the whole Spider family and their families in particular."

Officials say everyone got out safely, but the damage was so bad, that a man and woman living in the home have to find a new place to live.
