CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A 17-year-old accused of murdering his 25-year old girlfriend at a Chesterfield home in June has waived some of his rights as the case moves forward.

According to police, Misty Bessette was shot and killed in her home.

According to Duncan Minton with the Commonwealth's Attorney's office said while in court Tuesday, Dominic Mendoza, who turns 18 on Aug. 2, had his charges amended to first degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of first degree murder.

The original charge was second degree murder.  After the amendment, Mendoza waived his right to a preliminary hearing.  He was thoroughly questioned by the judge before making his final decision.

The case a was certified and will go before a grand jury in September.
