Petersburg fire captain found guilty of animal cruelty

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A Petersburg fire captain has been found guilty on animal cruelty charges.

A jury convicted Jeff Ivey of four misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

On January 5, animal control officers found eight dogs abandoned at Ivey's Chesterfield County home. Four of the dogs were dead and four others, barely alive.

Prosecutors say the animals lacked adequate food, shelter, and access to medical care while in Ivey's custody.

Ivey will not serve jail time as part of his conviction. He has been ordered to pay a fine totaling $10,000.
