YMCA is changing its name to 'The Y'

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - One of the world's most famous non profit organizations, the YMCA, is changing its name.

It'll now be known as "The Y" -- a nickname people have been using for years.

The charity focuses its work on youth programs, healthy living and communities.

A spokesperson says the rebranding is an effort to be more attractive and inviting to people of all ages.

Experts praise the move as a way of showing the charity offers a wide variety of services, including traditional gyms.

The YMCA, which stands for Young Men's Christian Association, was founded in London in 1844.
