LOUISA COUNTY, VA (WWBT) – In the tight knit gated community, of Blue Ridge Shores, families enjoy the water and their privacy.
But on Wednesday the quiet neighborhood on Lakeview Circle was rattled when 48-year-old Ronald and 49-year-old Laura Jewell were arrested on felony charges of torturing their 8-year-old granddaughter.
Commonwealth's attorney, Rusty McGuire says it's a class 6 felony, worthy of a harsh conviction.
"It's referring to cruelty to children and one of the bases of it is torture, also it's for over working children, malnutrition, and other types of cruelty to children," said McGuire.
McGuire didn't discuss the details of the case, but the arrest warrants state the couple had 'intent to maim, disfigure, disable, or kill.'
Each grandparent faces two counts of felony charges of torture and malicious wounding. Long time Blue Ridge Shores resident, Lynn Finn couldn't believe it.
"I'm appalled, I can't believe that just so close down the street from us that this would be happening…I really feel for the child, I really, really do," said Finn.
Just outside the gated community, we ran into Peggy. She and her kids just finished swimming at the lake.
"Very shocking especially for Louisa County you don't hear much about that around here, I could not imagine someone, especially grandparents doing that to my children," said Peggy Peyton.
"The hard thing is you never know what goes on behind closed doors and that's the sad part of the world today, you just never know," said Louisa resident Dorothy Knighton.
Prosecutors didn't want to go into detail about where the young girl is tonight or her condition. The Jewells will stand before a judge for another bond hearing on Monday.
