Heat wave continues today

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - More people have died in Virginia of heat related illness already this year compared to all of last year.

The heat is taking a toll on a lot of people: from those out enjoying leisure activities, to those who serve and protect.

Already this year three people have died because of the hot temperatures in Virginia, one in the nation's capital.

In Maryland, that number has climbed to six.

The heat is also taking its toll on firefighters. A fire in Henrico County this weekend was upgraded to a second alarm, not because of how large the fire was, but because of the need for backup in the soaring temperatures.

Drinking plenty of water can help ease the discomfort of the heat, but don't forget about your pets. Keep them out of the heat and make sure they also have plenty of water.
