Fireworks still used this weekend despite ban

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – As the fireworks exploded in the night sky over the City of Richmond, many people were having displays of their own. YouTube video shows the illegal lighting of fireworks happening in Chesterfield County this weekend. Lindsay Schoonover is one of the many people who saw this type of activity going on first hand right here in Richmond.

"It's the fourth of July thing," said Schoonover. "I think it's--it always happens especially in Richmond. We all like fire and like to blow things up. But the funny thing was that I saw a bunch of Richmond cops driving by as we were lighting the fireworks and stuff and nobody stopped us."

Police rely on tips from neighbors to crack down on those responsible. Firefighters tell us that while fireworks usage here is illegal it's also dangerous and led to reports of at least one fire in the City of Richmond over the weekend.

"As you drove around the city you could see a variety of displays put on by individuals," said Richmond Fire Department Lt. Shawn Jones. "Well, by the time you get to that area the displays had ceased."

Schoonover believes more must be done to prevent fireworks use in our area.

"Definitely better police enforcement," said Schoonover. "I heard them being lit off all over the place."
