RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - From Carytown to the Bottom, dozens of bars and restaurant will cater to holiday partiers and that big green bus that offers free rides all night made some changes.
About 3,000 riders rely on the 'To the Bottom and Back' bus 4 days a week. At Starlite in the Fan district, Beau Beau the bartender sees a big demand for it, but there is a small problem.
"Most of the time they don't know when, because there's no set schedule when they come to specific bars, so they're always asking when is it going to come," said Beau Beau.
The wait can be from two to twenty minutes, enough time to either pay the bill or get another drink. Well that issue has now been solved, thanks to a new GPS device that now tracks exactly where the bus is during operating hours.
You can track it on your computer, your phone, and soon on the monitors installed at the bars and even nearby hotels.
"It's no 5 seconds delay, it's no refreshing of the page, it's literally live time," said founder Jim Porter.
Thanks to its sponsors, Porter has now started running a second bus.
"We have a lot of people on our buses right now. This is going to take some of the crowdedness out and we're going to move people faster," Porter said.
"The Bottom has a lot of police officers that are very strict on DUI's and I think it's very good so, the bus can only help that out," said Starlite patron, Curt Crostic.
Curt and his buddies have never taken the green bus, but now it could be something to consider.
"I think I would. I think it's always better to take the bus in a safe environment than be on the road drinking and driving," Crostic said.
