RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Murder charges were dismissed this week against a Richmond man who shot and killed his girlfriend's 18-year-old son.

Prosecutors have ruled the shooting by Andre Russell Harvin, 51, as an act of self defense.

Jameal Smith was killed May 27 in his  mother's home on Euclid Avenue in Richmond's Fulton Hill neighborhood.

Prosecutors say Smith had been demanding money from his mother for several months to buy drugs. They say when she refused to give him money in May, Smith kicked in the door, got a knife and charged Harvin.

The ruling drops Richmond's murder total from 20 to 19 for the year.
