First African-American firefighters honored

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Thursday the Richmond Fire Department celebrates the 60th anniversary of the first African-American firefighters in the Commonwealth.

The city hired the first African-American professional firefighters back in 1950.

The ten men were stationed at Engine Company 9, located at 5th and Duval Streets.

The department will celebrate their anniversary at noon Thursday at the Cedar Street Memorial Baptist Church.

The three surviving members will be present to share their memories with the Richmond Fire Department.
