Changes coming to RIC parking and shuttle service

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Changes are coming to the way you park and ride the shuttle at Richmond International Airport. Starting in September, you'll find door to door shuttle service to and from the airport if you are parking in the economy lots.

Traveler Nick Kessler got lucky today. But he knows parking and getting on one of these shuttles to the terminal can sometimes be difficult.

"Sometimes in the past it's taken a while so if you could tell me where to park and the quickest place to park, that would be an improvement," says Kessler.

He's in luck. Because that's exactly what will happen, plus, standing outside underneath one of these shuttle stops, will likely be a thing of the past.

"What that means they will park in zones, people will guide them into the zones as they arrive at the airport and they will load the people onto the shuttles with baggage assistance and be escorted into the terminal doors," says Troy Bell with the Airport.

This will happen first in economy lot B and C. Right now, lot B is under construction. Door-to-door service will begin there when it opens in September.

"They don't have to wait for a shuttle to circulate through a rather large sized lot. They will be right with them as they arrive at the airport," adds Bell.

Ideally, the service would be the same when you're ready to pull out of the lot after arriving back at the airport, following your trip.

That's welcome news to Nick, especially since the "new" lot B opens, it will have triple the number of parking spaces. Without the service, the shuttles would likely spend a lot of time trying to pick people up.

"As long as they can make it more convenient, I'd be more likely to fly," says Kessler.

Right now, these parking lots generate more than 40 percent of the airport's revenue.

Despite all these changes, airport leaders say the price you pay to park in the economy lots will remain the same, at $7 per day.

Also, once Lot B opens, Lot A will close for two months for renovations. When that reopens, the door to door service will be offered there as well. Near the end of the year, economy Lot C will close, and possibly for good.
