RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A water main bust is still causing problems for drivers trying to use the Mayo Bridge.

Right now, one lane in each direction is open on the Mayo Bridge near the problem. Expect it to be that way through the morning rush as crews get ready to pave the roadway after Monday's big mess.

It all started around 4 am on Monday morning. An old cast iron pipe underneath the Mayo Bridge burst.

After hours of prepping, crews finally brought out the big equipment and replaced a section of the pipe that was missing.

The city says the busted pipe was worked on back in the 1980's and was scheduled to receive maintenance again in the near future.

Crews have filled the hole with materials that they are waiting to harden now before they repave part of the bridge Tuesday. It's unclear when that will be finished and what exactly caused the problem in the first place.
