RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Two women were robbed a gunpoint in Richmond's Fan District Wednesday night.

It happened around midnight in the 1400 block of West Main Street, just west of VCU's Monroe Park Campus.

The 23-year-old victims had just exited a nearby 7-11 and were walking home when they were approached by a man with a handgun demanding them to drop their purses.

He grabbed their bags and ran down main toward campus.

The suspect is described as a black male, wearing a black shirt and black athletic shorts and a dark colored towel over his head.

Police say they don't believe this incident is connected to several recent robberies in The Fan, including two on Monday involving two men in a sport utility vehicle.

According to Richmond police crime statistics, there have been six street robberies in The Fan in the last 10 days.

The incidents have occurred on Park, Monument and Floyd avenues and Main and Broad streets.
