New tobacco rules in effect Tuesday

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A number of new rules governing the sales and marketing of tobacco products go into effect Tuesday.

One year ago President Obama signed a law giving the FDA authority to regulate tobacco products.

We will now see the first fruits of that law.

The FDA now prohibits giving free samples of cigarettes, or selling packs with fewer than 20 cigarettes.

Sales of cigarettes in vending machines will be much more severely restricted.

Tobacco brand names will no longer be able to sponsor social or cultural events or sports teams.

The new regulations also prohibit the sale of hats and t-shirts with tobacco brands or logos on them.
