Spotsylvania Sheriff's deputy dies in boating accident

SPOTSYLVANIA, VA (WWBT) – A 52-year-old Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Deputy died Saturday afternoon after a boating accident on Lake Anna.

The Sheriff's Office reports that Deputy Dean Ridings and another deputy were on marine patrol around 12:40 p.m. when there was some type of accident.

Ridings was injured and taken to Mary Washington Hospital where he later died.

The Sheriff's Office reports the other deputy was treated for lesser injuries.

It's unclear as to what caused the accident.

The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is handling the investigating.

Deputy Ridings had served the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office since 2004.
