HOPEWELL, VA (WWBT) – A toddler is found wandering in the street wearing only a diaper. Now, an investigation is underway.

Police knocked on dozens of doors looking for the little girl's parents but were unsuccessful. That's when they issued an alert.

That alert has been lifted. The father of the little girl contacted Hopewell police about an hour after a stranger found the toddler literally walking in the street.

We don't know her name, but we do know this toddler managed to get out of her home on Courthouse Road in Hopewell sometime this morning around 10:30-11 a.m.

She was barefoot with no clothes on, wearing only a diaper.

A man saw the girl walking by herself near the intersection of Miles Avenue and Freeman Street. He called police and stayed with her until officers arrived.

"She wasn't able to give us her name, but she was happy and seem to be well mannered," said Captain Gregory Taylor of the Hopewell Police Department.

Police knocked on doors trying to identify the girl's parents. They had no luck and turned the toddler over to the Department of Social Services.

By noon, the girl's father reached out to police. We were told the toddler's dad works nights and was watching the girl this morning but fell asleep -- when he woke up she was gone.

"It could have been a tragic ending with her being out here unsupervised. Anyone could have picked her up and it could have been a very tragic situation," Taylor said.

It's unclear exactly how long the little girl had been wandering in the streets. She was found about a block away from her home. At last check the toddler was still in the custody of DSS.
