CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - VDOT has announced that it has completed all work on Turner Road just south of Hull Street Road (Route 360) to repair the sinkhole that was discovered earlier this week.
Crews replaced two storm sewer conveyance pipes. The pipes were installed in the 1970's and were made of corrugated heavy gauge riveted steel, according to VDOT.
The condition of the pipes is not unusual for the age of the pipes. The bottom of both pipes had corroded over time. One pipe had visibly (once uncovered) separated joints. The separated joints caused the void in the pavement (in the southbound lanes to create the pavement depression found on Monday. An additional void was identified in the northbound lane when excavation began yesterday.
Turner Road is open and safe for motorists to travel. Crews monitored the area last night and will continue to monitor the area over the next few weeks.
