RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Drivers can expect a brief delay at the Huguenot Bridge (Route 147) Wednesday afternoon as crews install a support system that will be used to maintain the bridge during repairs. This support system can only be installed when vehicles are not using the bridge. This delay will impact both north and southbound traffic.
Traffic will be stopped for 10 to 15 minutes sometime between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. today. During the closure, VDOT recommends drivers use the following alternate routes:
- Northbound Huguenot Road - Chippenham Parkway (Route 150) north over the Willey Bridge to River Road east to Huguenot Road or use Powhite Parkway (toll) east into Richmond
- Southbound Huguenot Road – River Road west to Chippenham Parkway (Route 150) south to Huguenot Road
VDOT initiated an emergency contract to make immediate repairs to the 61 year old bridge after engineers discovered a deteriorated concrete pier cap on the south end of the bridge last week. For driver safety, VDOT decreased the maximum vehicle weight to 3 tons (6,000 pounds) until repairs are complete. The contractor began repairs earlier this week and expects the work to continue through early July. The vehicle weight limit will return to normal capacity once repairs are complete.
