UPDATE: Chesterfield sink hole to be filled on Wednesday

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - The sinkhole that snarled up traffic on Monday will not be permanently fixed until Wednesday. But, it is going to cause a big traffic issue tomorrow morning.

This is all happening at the intersection of Turner Road and Hull Street in Chesterfield.

Slowly, inch by inch, road crews are cutting around the massive 6-foot sink hole, a hole that truck driver Steve Thompson almost didn't see.

"When I heard it on the news last night, I thought I could have been the news," says Thompson.

Steve was driving along Turner Road, on his way home, when he came up to the rapidly sinking hole.

"So, I moved over a little bit to the right but when I crossed it, I could feel the big tires of the truck tipping a little bit," says Steve.

"It wasn't like a pothole where you could see a bottom. I couldn't see a bottom but I didn't think it was 6 feet,"says Steve.

But moments later, the bottom fell out and the ground gave way. VDOT tells us a pipe underground burst, causing this mess.

A temporary patch is now in place and it may be this way for at least another day.

On Tuesday, crews closed a few lanes, as they worked to figure out how to tackle the problem.

"It's simple a matter of a normal course of action for us when we have utilities conflicts to get them clearly marked so we know what we are dealing with," says Dale Totten with VDOT.

Then around 7 a.m. Wednesday morning, after getting the all-clear, the digging can begin.

At this point no one knows how much damage there is to the pipe underground.

Meanwhile Steve is just glad he made it home, now knowing how serious things could have been.

"I guess I got lucky!," he said.

So, the work today is done and the road is safe to drive on. But tomorrow both sides of Turner Road at Hull Street will be closed just after dawn to fix what may be some old sewer lines that may be failing underground.

During the morning commute, expect major delay on both Turner Road and Hull Street Road. Motorists should use an alternate route to avoid this area or take the following detour:

  • Eastbound Hull Street Road drivers who need to access Turner Road are encouraged to use Walmsley Boulevard as an alternate.
  • Westbound Hull Street Road drivers would use Goodes Bridge Road to access Turner Road.
