Richmond man gets 8 years for campus shooting

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Richmond man who pleaded guilty to wounding a Virginia Union University student in an on campus shooting will spend eight years in prison.

Jimar Lee Jewell was sentenced Friday morning. He had pleaded guilty in March to malicious wounding and a firearms charge.

Richmond Circuit Judge Bradley B. Cavedo gave the 22-year-old Jewell suspended. Jewell received three years on the firearms charge.

Police said Jewell shot Eric Suggs in the thigh and ankle on August 30 during a fight on the campus. Suggs has since recovered and is no longer a student at the university.
