UPDATE: Worker killed by moving train in Hanover

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - A CSX employee is dead after being struck by a train while on the job.  The accident happened at a train yard in the Doswell section of Hanover County. Investigators say the 55-year-old man was an experienced railroad employee- now authorities are working to figure out what went wrong.

It was just after 10:00 this morning when emergency workers got the call: Something had gone terribly wrong at the Doswell train yard.

"Since then we've been working with CSX officials to determine the scope of everyone's responsibilities- what actually went wrong here," said Capt. Mike Trice with the Hanover County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators say the 55-year-old man was working near the tracks when he was struck by a northbound train. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The medical examiner's office assisted us at the scene, and the body will be ultimately transported to the medical examiner's office for further investigation," Trice said.

The accident shut down train traffic along this stretch of track a few miles north of Ashland.

An Amtrak train was delayed for over an hour, and had to be re-routed on its way north to Washington, D.C.

Meanwhile, investigators remained focused on the more important issue-- the tragic death of a man they describe as an experience railroad worker. State and federal safety agencies joined in the search for answers. Authorities say accidents like this are rare.

"Most of the incidents involving trains that people are familiar with involve crossings, and not normally among employees working in yards- so yeah, this is an unusual incident," said Trice.

Police have not released the victim's identity- they are in the process of notifying his family.
