HANOVER COUNTY, VA (WWBT) - Things could soon be quieter in Hanover County. The Board of Supervisors unanimously passed the noise ordinance Wednesday night.
The biggest change is that the ordinance is now enforceable.
Hanover has had a policy in place for more than 30 years, but changes were necessary after the Supreme Court struck down a similar ordinance in Virginia Beach.
Violators can be fined up to $250 for the first offense, and up to $500 for subsequent violations.
The minor revision to the proposal had to do with the length of time an automobile without a muffler could operate.
The supervisors adjusted the ordinance to accommodate trucks that could be loading and unloading.
In addition to fines, the Sheriff's department also has the option to request a criminal summons when appropriate.
