Fallen firefighters honored at annual service

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Firefighters from around the Commonwealth flocked to the metro for the Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.

The Richmond Raceway Complex was packed for the 13th annual service.

The memorial honors all Virginia firefighters who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

In the past year, the Commonwealth lost six firefighters: from Pulaski, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Dante.

Local firefighters said they hoped to be supportive to the families of the firefighters who were lost.

"The fire service is a unique breed of individuals that work together," said Henrico Fire Capt. Chris Buehren. "We stay in the same fire stations together. We break bread at the same tables together and we put our lives on the line together."

Virginia state flags were presented to the families of those fallen firefighters.
