HENRICO, VA (WWBT) – Virginia highways are getting a much needed facelift as VDOT works to improve stretches of highways in our area. This weekend, several major exits and lanes will be closed while they undergo necessary repairs.
"A lot of people don't realize that you have to dig out the existing pavement and put in new section before we can put in the asphalt overlay," said VDOT spokesperson, Dawn Eischen. "We've had quite a few people ask us why didn't we just go out and put new asphalt down? Well that's the plan after we finish the pavement repairs."
The work begins Friday night at 10 p.m. and will reopen at 6 a.m. These are the areas you'll need to avoid. The Parham Road exit 181 on I-64 west will be closed. Also having work done is the ramp from Broad Street west to I-64 west. Exit 183, the Broad and Glenside exit on I-64 is also being worked on. The I-64 east ramp to I-95 north will have several detours posted for drivers and alternating lanes will be closed throughout the night. While the repairs are desperately needed, drivers are wondering what's taking so long.
"It's a bad time of year to be doing it I know that," said one frustrated driver.
"Inconvenience!" said driver, Nalinya Harris. "Because the traffic! Yeah, you cleared up the potholes but the traffic is still terrible!"
VDOT crews hope to have the work completed by November at the latest.
