RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The US national soccer team arrived in South Africa overnight for the World Cup tournament.

The start of the World Cup prompted emergency legislation in Washington.

Tuesday night, DC council passed a proposal to allow bars to open as early as 7 a.m. for the month-long event.

The games are on a six-hour time zone difference, and some games will be played as early as 7:30 a.m. here.

The new ordinance allows bars to register with the Alcoholic Beverage Commission and pay a flat fee to open early.

The US opens its World Cup campaign June 12th against England.
