RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – VCU police kicked off the holiday weekend with a DUI checkpoint located on Main and Laurel Streets. Officers plan to be out from 11:00 Friday night until 3:00 Saturday morning. This checkpoint on Memorial Day weekend also coincides with the national Click It or Ticket campaign.

Last year there were 756 traffic related fatalities on Virginia roads. Almost one third of them involved a person not wearing their seatbelts, according to figures from the Virginia Highway Safety Office. If you do get stuck in a checkpoint, officers say don't think about trying to turn around to try and get away.

"We do have some action plans in place for that. We'll be having a state police with us which does have a vehicle. I'm sure they will try to stop them if they can - in a safe manner, but if they can't we will just let it go," said Cpl. Jonathan Siok with the VCU Police Department.
