Virginia competing for education grants

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Virginia is competing a second time for funding through the Obama administration's top education grant program.

$250 million is up for grabs - and the governor says the Commonwealth wants in.

The state applied unsuccessfully for $350 million in the first round of the more than $4 billion program intended to spur education reform.

Virginia wavered a bit on whether to reapply because of a push to adopt national reading and math standards over the SOLs Virginia has used for decades.
