RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The unofficial start to summer is almost here and, like always, Memorial Day weekend may bring that bumper-to-bumper traffic on I-95.

But something to look forward to - you're going to save a little change on gas now.

Sitting in traffic waiting to get to your vacation spot certainly can be a pain. So can the amount of money you spend on gas getting there. But if you've checked out the big price signs at those gas stations lately, you've seen them dropping!

That's a welcome surprise to many of us.

Nationally, AAA says the price of gas now sits at $2.78 for a gallon of regular. That's down seven cents since last week but almost 40 cents more than this time last year.

Still, lower prices in the past few weeks may lead more people to venture out starting on Friday, so many state leaders are urging you to have fun and be safe.

"Put away your cell phone, pay attention to what you are doing," said DMV spokeswoman Melanie Stokes. "Concentrate on the task at hand. Make sure we all have a safe and fun weekend."
