HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - Hanover deputies have made an arrest in the county's first homicide in more than two years. 48 year-old Russell Chalkley is charged with murder in the death of Helen Dickerson. The two lived together at a home in Mechanicsville.
Sheriff's deputies came to the house on White Oak Ridge Drive to check on 67-year-old Helen Dickerson Thursday evening. A concerned family member asked officers to make the visit.
"When officers arrived, they found Ms. Dickerson deceased, an apparent victim of homicide," said Capt. Mike Trice with the sheriff's department.
Attention quickly turned to Dickerson's 48-year-old boyfriend.
"We focused in on Russell Chalkley, who lived with Ms. Dickerson at that residence for some time," Trice said.
The search for Chalkley didn't last long-- he was arrested just hours later at a travel center just up the road in Caroline County.
"We're glad that he was apprehended almost immediately after the investigation began," said Trice, "and we just look forward to contributing to the court case in the hopes that justice will be served."
Chalkley appeared before a judge Friday afternoon and was charged with first degree murder. He is being held without bond at the Pamunkey Regional Jail. Hanover authorities are continuing the homicide investigation, their first since January of 2008.
