BEDFORD, VA (WWBT) - Three children, all under the age of 12, were spotted being piled into the trunk of a car in Bedford County last July.
The family told investigators they were on their way back to Petersburg; a 2 and half hour drive. It was a hot day when an employee at a McDonald's in Bedford, spotted Dwayne and Conchita Spurlock and their friend Armentha Kennedy.
They were piling three kids ages 8, 9 and 11 into the trunk of their car.
It was enough for the employee to call police.
"We first arrived on scene and opened the trunk and all you see are three sets of legs sticking out at you as the kids were packed in the trunk," said Lt. Kyle Williams of the Bedford County Sheriff's Department.
The car only made it 5 miles away from the McDonald's parking lot with kids packed inside, when police pulled over the Spurlocks. What they found inside the trunk was enough for them to arrest the parents and their friend, Kennedy.
Tuesday, in Bedford County Circuit court, the three all pleaded guilty to a variety of crimes. The most serious will send the Spurlocks to jail for four months. Kennedy will serve one month.
At the time they said they were coming home from a family reunion in Roanoke, when one of the two cars they were traveling in broke down. Forcing them to pack 9 people in a small Hyundai built for 5, that meant the three smallest were sent to the trunk.
"The exhaust fumes and everything like that in a trunk could have easily lead to a problem and even worse, if they were involved in an accident where somebody rear ended the vehicle," Lt. Williams said.
On a day where temperatures soared into the 80's, Police saved the kids from a long, bumpy and dangerous journey.
All three adults were given 12 months sentences, the bulk of which were suspended.
They will all face three years of unsupervised probation once they get out of jail.
