PRINCE GEORGE, VA (WWBT) – One dog is dead, another injured. Now, Prince George County Police are trying to piece together what went wrong.

It started Sunday night. Stacey Dunn and her family were returning home from a weekend getaway. As they pulled into their driveway -- a shocking scene.

"Our dog's hair was all over the porches. Blood was on our front door, rail, and back door," said Dunn.

Also on their front porch, a pit bull in a pool of blood. The animal belongs to a neighbor. Dunn's five year old Labrador, Hershey, was nowhere to be found.

"We stayed up all night calling, walking around, and looking for him," said Dunn.

Hershey was located Monday. He was found dead near Dunn's home.

"I'm just going to miss him," said Dunn.

Animal control says Hershey and that pit bull found on Dunn's property showed signs of being in a fight. It's unclear if the animals fought each other or if there are other animals involved.

The owner of the pit bull wasn't at home when we visited Tuesday afternoon. Investigators say the owner of the animal was also out of town over the weekend when the dogs were injured.

"At this point no charges are pending. Hopefully, we can find someone who heard something or saw something," said Animal Control Supervisor, Lt. Mary Beth Newton.

Animal Control has the pit bull in custody. It also has a message for pet owners.

"Be aware of where you're animal is. You're responsible for their care and welfare," said Newton.

Dunn has an electric fence around her home. It keeps her dogs in, but not other dogs out. Dunn says her daughter is having a difficult time with the situation.

We did a story with the little girl in 2007 -- when she was attacked by a different neighborhood pit bull. For now, Dunn is looking for answers while dealing with the loss of her lab.

If you have any information about this case you're asked to contact Prince George County Animal Control at 733-2796.
