Reward offered in Richmond police officer assault

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers in conjunction with the Richmond Police Department is offering an additional $1,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of a man who allegedly assaulted a Richmond Police officer Saturday.

Richmond Police are looking Willie Clayborne Coley Jr., 34, of the 8800 block Midway Road. Coley has been identified as the suspect in the assault on a Richmond Police officer.

According to police, two officers were on routine foot patrol just after 9:45 a.m. in the Gilpin Court neighborhood when they spotted Coley acting suspiciously.

Police say the officers approached the him, a talk ensued, then he then produced a handgun.

Police and Coley struggled over the weapon and an officer was struck in the head and face with the gun. The officer was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.

Police say that after striking the officer, Coley led police on a foot chase through Gilpin Court, and is still at large.

Anyone with information about Coley's whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
