RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Funeral arrangements are set for a six year old boy who family members say died while under anesthesia at VCU's School of Dentistry. Today, an autopsy was performed on the little boy.
That autopsy got underway this morning. No word just yet on cause of death, or manner of death. Meanwhile, we're getting a better sense of the timeline of events that unfolded at the dental clinic.
Family members say six year old Jacobi Hill arrived at VCU's Pediatric Dental Clinic around 8:00 Tuesday morning. The kindergarten student had an appointment to get caps on several teeth. By 9:00 family members say Jacobi was taken to the area where his surgery was to be performed. His parents stood-by in the waiting area.
"They went up and asked questions and they said 'it's taking a while', and my daughter said in about a half hour they went and said 'how's my son', and they said 'he's okay'," said Carolyn Suggs, Jacobi's Grandmother.
Carolyn Suggs says her daughter asked three times if Jacobi was okay -- and was reassured everything was fine.
At 11:48 Richmond Ambulance Authority says it got a priority one life-threatening emergency call involving a 6-year-old boy, the problem was reported to be cardiac arrest. The ambulance arrived at the dental clinic at 11:54 a.m. The unit left the dental practice with the patient at 12:18 and arrived two minutes later at the emergency department at VCU Medical Center.
Grandparents say they were notified of Jacobi's death by 12:30. They believe he died while under anesthesia at the clinic.
Along with Jacobi's immediate family, his school family at Longdale Elementary is also having a tough time dealing with the little boy's unexpected death. A crisis team has been brought in to talk to students.
"We send extra counselors and psychologists to the school to talk to all students, and to talk to them that's age appropriate," said Henrico County Schools Spokesperson Mychael Dickerson.
For now, friends and family members continue to wait for answers.
VCU issued the following statement: "Investigating an unfortunate incident that happened Tuesday when a pediatric patient in the dental clinic needed to be taken to the emergency department."
Jacobi's funeral is open to the public. It's scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Monday. It'll take place at Walter Manning Funeral Home in Richmond.
