Maymont's bald eagle Liberty dies

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Maymont's female bald eagle Liberty died Wednesday morning.

She most recently had a foot infection in October and was also diagnosed with an irregular heart beat.  The cause of her death will be determined upon the results of her necropsy.

Liberty came to Maymont in August of 2008.

She was found in a King and Queen County landfill with a fractured left wing.  She was taken to the Wildlife Center of Virginia where she had surgery to repair her wing.  She was then donated to Maymont where she lived in the bald eagle exhibit with a male bald eagle named Quincy.

Bald eagles can live up to 40 years in captivity but the age of Liberty is unknown since she came to Maymont as an adult.
