PRINCE GEORGE, VA (WWBT) – An argument leads to a double murder in Prince George County. The shootings happened early Friday morning in the 18000 block of James River Drive.
The shooting involved four men. Police say there was a disagreement -- one of the men grabbed a gun and fired multiple shots. The mother of one of the murder victims is desperate for answers.
"Why did he kill my son? He should not have killed my son," said Joyce Gholston.
Gholston's only child, 22 year old Alfred Piker Junior, is one of the two men who was shot and killed.
"He was a good person. He wasn't a bad person," said Gholston.
Police say the four men were inside a home on James River Drive. An altercation erupted--then, gunfire. Police say forty year old Douglas Daugherty murdered Piker and 22 year old Rashawn Jones. The third man who was inside the home ran and called for help.
"The victims didn't live in the home. The suspects didn't live in the home. There's a relationship between the suspect and the homeowner," said Prince George County Police Captain Eric Young.
Police say the homeowner was not at home when the crimes unfolded. It's unclear why the men were inside the home. Police say the four men involved were acquaintances.
Investigators say after the shooting, Daugherty jumped in his truck and led police on a pursuit. The chase lasted about 10 minutes. It ended on Pole Run Road when the suspect ran his vehicle off the road and into a field. A friend of Daugherty, who asked we not reveal his identity, is stunned.
"This is total out of character. He's always been very active with his boys and playing ball and coaching. He's one of the nicest young men I'd ever met and it's been devastating to me and my wife."
Daugherty now faces multiple charges including capitol murder and first degree murder. Gholston is facing life without her son. Daugherty is being held without bond at Riverside Regional Jail.
