Postal employee faces federal charge

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A part-time postal worker has been suspended over the abandoned mail found in a Chesterfield creek. We first reported the missing mail one week ago, now investigators say they know what happened.

20 year old Timothy Myrick has been charged with one count of abandoning mail - a federal offense. U.S. Postal inspectors tell NBC12 that Myrick was part-time, and had only been on the job 5 months. He's since been placed on administrative leave without pay.

Residents who saw the mail, everything from letters - to small packages, sitting in the creek called NBC12 for guidance. We found more abandoned mail, and called postal officials who started investigating immediately.

Myrick is scheduled for a May 25 hearing on the one count of abandoning mail in Richmond federal court.
