Club Velvet attorney: Sam Moore to close strip club

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - In a surprising late-afternoon revelation, the attorney representing Richmond's Club Velvet and its owner, Sam Moore, will not appeal an ABC Board decision to revoke the club's alcohol license. Furthermore, the attorney, Kevin Martingayle, said Moore is now intent on closing the controversial strip club.

The development came just hours after the three-member ABC Board voted unanimously to affirm an earlier recommendation to revoke Velvet's license to sell wine and beer. ABC agents reported seeing underage drinking, drug activity, and illegal sex acts during an undercover investigation spanning several months. Martingayle yesterday accused ABC agents of "entrapment", an argument that failed to sway the board.

In an afternoon phone conversation, Martingayle was asked point-blank if Sam Moore now plans to close Club Velvet. Martingayle responded, "Yes."

Further plans were not immediately known. Moore himself did not comment.

Two people are being helped by the Red Cross, after a fire broke out at their Richmond home. Crews tell us the fire broke out in the 5500 block of Campbell Avenue around 10:55 this morning. When they got on scene, fire crews saw flames coming from the back of the home. They were able to get the fire under control in about 15 minutes. Officials say everyone got out safely, but the damage was so bad, that a man and woman living in the home have to find a new place to live.
