UVA students shocked by murder

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (WWBT) – We have new details about the murder of a University of Virginia student in Charlottesville. We've learned the suspect, 22-year-old George Huguely, will be arraigned in Charlottesville Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. on a first degree murder charge.

Huguely is accused of killing his girlfriend, 22-year-old Yeardley Love. Both played for the university's lacrosse teams.

Love was living her dream. The UVA senior was playing lacrosse for the number four team in the country and set to graduate in a matter of weeks. That's difficult for Student Body President Colin Hood and many other students to comprehend.

"To end a four year career at this university with so many dreams and ambitions after attending one of the best universities in the world, I can't imagine having those end abruptly only days before you walk this lawn for the last time," he said.

Love will never take that walk. Authorities were called to her apartment on 14th Street NW for an alcohol overdose, but found something far worse when they arrived. Police said there were obvious signs of trauma.

A short time later senior George Huguely was charged with first degree murder. Huguely played for the men's lacrosse team, which is ranked number one in the country. Friends said the two dated.

UVA lacrosse stickers dot many of the cars in Love's complex. We're told many of the men's and women's lacrosse players live there. Those we ran into didn't want to talk to us on camera. The athletic director said coaches are meeting with players to find out how they're coping.

Many neighbors repeatedly used the word shock to describe their feelings about the situation. They said Yeardley was always smiling and constantly surrounded by friends.

"I feel just a tremendous loss, not even really knowing her," said neighbor Bryan Gurnee. "It breaks me up knowing that people have to go through this."

The medical examiner in Richmond will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death Tuesday. Counselors are available on campus to help students deal with the tragedy.
