CHARLOTTSVILLE, VA (WWBT) – Shock on the University of Virginia campus tonight. A member of the women's lacrosse team was found dead this morning. Her former boyfriend, and a member of the men's lacrosse team, is now accused of her murder. The students were both seniors and were set to graduate in just 23 days.

We talked to many, many grieving students who know both of these lacrosse players. And they say they cannot believe what police say happened here.

She had wanted to play lacrosse at UVA since she was a little girl. In an interview just last year, she said coming here was a dream come true. 22 year old Yeardley Love was to graduate in three weeks.

"How could this happen to such a wonderful person. A person that was described as an angel by team mates and friends," said Craig Littlepage, UVA Athletic Director.

Around 2:15 this morning, Love was found dead in her bedroom at her apartment on 14th Street Northwest. Officers were told they were responding to an alcohol overdose, but they called for detectives as soon as they saw love.

"It was quickly apparent to them, that this young lady was the victim of something far worse. There were obvious physical injuries to her body," said Charlottesville Police Chief Tim Longo.

Love was a senior, lacrosse player on the number 4 ranked team in the nation. Police and friends said she had dated 22 year old George Huguely. He played on the number one ranked men's lacrosse team. He was honored on Saturday for his four years with the team.

Tonight he's behind bars accused of first degree murder.

"The entire university community is both shocked and saddened over the news today of Ms. Loves death by the hand of a murder," said UVA VP of Operations Leonard Sandridge.

Police won't say what led to Huguely's arrest, only that he is cooperating. He lived two buildings down from Love. Police spent much of today at both apartments looking for evidence.

The police chief described Love and Huguely as a tragedy; two people who just one day ago stood at the threshold of their lives.

"It's definitely difficult to fathom. It's definitely difficult to fathom," said UVA student Rowan Webster.

Counselors have been brought in to help the students and specifically the team mates of these two athletes. George Huguely is being held at the Charlottesville Albemarle Regional Jail.

Charlottesville Police are continuing to investigate the case and will provide more details as they become available. Anyone with additional information about this incident is asked to call Charlottesville Police Sergeant Mark Brake at 970-3970 or Crime Stoppers at 977-4000.
