HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Virginia farmers' markets are gearing up for a big opening weekend. More than 180 are set up to open statewide -- many of them in the Richmond area.
The Lakeside Farmers' Market will open under its new pavilion for the first time Saturday morning. The owners are hoping to bring in people to shop local while revamping business energy into this community at the same time.
Peter Francisco and his wife Sharon own and operate the Lakeside Farmers' Market along with several other businesses in this community. They are excited about the opportunities yet to come. Working alongside Henrico County, they hope to bring in big business.
Owner Peter Francisco says, "we determined that a farmer's market would be one of the best things to bring out here to stimulate economic growth in the area, and in addition, it's just nice to bring fresh fruits and vegetables into the community."
The Retail Merchant's Association agrees.
A spokesperson says Lakeside is one of the oldest shopping corridors in the area, and more foot traffic will indeed lead to more business development. The Franciscos started this farmers' market two years ago, operating out of tents.
Now under the new pavilion at Lakeside Town Center, they'll be open every Wednesday and Saturday through November, and they are hoping to provide a sense of permanence.
Francisco says, "this is the regions first independently owned permanent farmer's market."
