Appliance rebate program begins Wednesday

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - You can now get green for going green.

Wednesday marks the first day of the new "Cash for Appliances" program.

The idea is for people to save money while helping the environment at the same time.

For instance, replace your old fridge with an Energy Star version. For that, you'd save $60 - good news when every little bit helps, and a great opportunity if it's something you were in the market for anyway.

All this is called the Virginia Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program.

What that mouthful basically means is that the US Department of Energy has provided $7.45 million to refund Virginians who are helping go green.

Under the program you can receive up to $300 back for buying certain Energy Star appliances.

"Essentially it's just helping people get Energy Star appliances, helping out the environment, people saving money on their electric bills, water bill," said hhgregg Sales Manager Jack Bailey. "Everyone is kind of saving all around."

If you buy a new heat pump you'll get $300 back in the form of a rebate. A new refrigerator will save you $60, and a new washer will save $75.

Although we aren't dealing with quite as much money or cars as the incredibly popular Cash for Clunkers program last summer, if this is even half as popular, you can expect a lot of appliance sales in the coming days.

The program will last until the money runs out.
