RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Tonight, parents, students and community members will be able to get their first look at the new Oak Grove Elementary School, that Richmond Public Schools is preparing to build.
The meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. at the current Oak Grove school, will include a preliminary model of what the new school will look like.
This is the first new school that will be built in the City of Richmond since 1998.
School and city leaders are stressing that this new building, which is actually one of four new schools to be built, will be first and foremost an educational facility. Also, they are looking to make sure the building is something that the community uses.
John Winter, with the City and the Project Manager, says he and his team are working with the city now to find ways to utilize the building for the community, outside of the school setting.
Dawn Page, School Board Vice Chair, tells us the School Board is excited to see the model tonight, as they are getting concrete dates set for construction and are seeing a model of what the new school will actually look like.
It is anticipated that the groundbreaking for the new Oak Grove Elementary School is set for November. If all goes well, the first bells will ring at the city's newest school in September of 2012.
We are learning the new building will be built on the vacant property on the Bellmeade Parks and Recreation property.
The meeting will be held tonight at the current Oak Grove Elementary School, located at 2220 Ingram Avenue, in the auditorium.
