PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Petersburg police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened at around 2 a.m. Monday morning in the 600 block of Wise Avenue.
Police found the body of George W. Vaughan, 58, while responding to a call at the residence.
Nasir K. Goode, a 24 year-old male of the 2000 block of Warren Avenue in Hopewell, was arrested and charged with first degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. A clear motive has not been determined.
As the day broke, word was spreading around this Petersburg neighborhood about the murder of Vaughan.
Police say he was shot twice inside his home. Moments later, he died.
David Yancey is one of those neighbors who said he talked to Vaughan from time to time.
"[Those conversations were] just very meaningful, he was fun loving person," says Yancey.
Investigators say two of Vaughan's relatives were inside the home when the shooting happened.
"Forensic evidence is now being collected to not only determine what happened, but if there was damage inside the home from this particular incident, or if it was done before," says Esther Hyatt with Petersburg Police.
Police also tell us they have found some weapons inside the home. But they are not sure if they were Vaughan's, or if they were used during the shooting.
Police are still following several leads in the case, and anyone with information is asked to call Crime Solvers at 861-1212.
