Rebate for old appliances

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Starting next Wednesday appliances like washing machines with an Energy Star logo on it will be eligible for cash back from a government program that gives you money for buying energy efficient appliances.

You may remember the Cash for Clunkers program this past summer, well you can consider this a type of Cash for Appliances program. A new program called the Virginia Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program is helping you save money.

"Essentially it's just helping people get Energy Star appliances, helping out the environment, people saving money on their electric bills, water bill," said Hhgregg sales manager, Jack Bailey. "Everyone is kind of saving all around."

Starting April 28 if you're in the market for new household items the government is giving you an incentive to go green. If you buy a new heat pump you'll get $300 back in the form of a rebate. Buy a new refrigerator and you'll save $60 and a new washer will save you $75 just to name a few appliances that qualify. The program has inspired people in the market for new appliances to begin shopping around. Hhgregg is cutting costs before the rebate is even offered.

"We heard about the Energy Star rebate," said Hhgregg customer, Chris Walls. "That's just an added bonus for us. We're here shopping for a fridge. Ours is kind of on the brink at the moment."

"I think it's going to be a great thing," said Bailey. "We've already had plenty of customers coming in asking about it, about the rebate getting more information, wanting to update their appliances."

The US Department of Energy has provided $300 million for this program. $7.45 million of that will stay right here in Virginia.

The rebate program is only good for appliances purchased on or after April 28 and of course they'll go until all of the money runs out."
