RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – A river rescue on the James after a boat goes crashing over a dam sending two people, including a child to the hospital.
In all, six people were on board the boat when it went barreling over the dam. It happened just west of the Willey Bridge, along the Richmond -- Henrico border. The boat made it ashore along Riverside Drive. They were taking this boat out for the very first time.
One of the men inside the boat said he never saw any warnings that the dam was up ahead, so when their boat went tumbling over, no one was prepared. Two people, one of them a child, banged themselves against the side of the boat. A scary moment for the people on board, but neighbors who live near the water say it could've been worse.
"It was hysterical, the person in the front seat fell over in the back and the two children in the back fell over and were crying," said a man who was on board the boat.
Carol McKnight who lives near the James River said the passengers were fortunate things turned out they way they did. "What's amazing is that they all stayed in that boat and they were lucky that the river was high because if the river was low they would've hit the rocks and they didn't."
Neighbors say there are signs warning boaters of the dam, but the people in the wrecked boat swear they did not see anything. Despite being rushed to the hospital none of the injuries to either boater are considered serious.
