UPDATE: Renovation begins at John Marshall Hotel

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -- Work began today to bring a historic building in downtown Richmond back to life.

Developers are renovating the John Marshall Hotel.

The rooms of the 16-story hotel will be transformed into 238 apartments with 20,000 square feet of retail space on the bottom floor.

The two historic ballrooms in the building will be restored and used as meeting space and banquet halls.

The work is expected to be finished in the fall of of next year. The historic hotel opened in 1929. It's been closed since 2004.
