HENRICO, VA (WWBT) – Henrico Public Schools and Police are investigating allegations of inappropriate behavior among students at Elko Middle School in the county's east end. We're told the principal became aware of the situation earlier this week.
We're not exactly sure the nature of that so-called inappropriate behavior. We did find out Wednesday a police report has been filed under the assault category. Henrico Police were quick to say they cannot classify the incidents as sexual assaults just yet because the school is still investigating.
We're told the school administration and Henrico Police are talking with both the victims and suspects. They're all middle school aged kids, although no one will say the genders of either group.
School Spokesperson Mychael Dickerson told NBC12 the investigation only includes students at Elko Middle School. No teachers or staff are involved. The school also wouldn't be investigating if those incidents didn't happen somewhere on school grounds.
We were able to get a little more information out of Henrico Police. Investigators said there are multiple suspects and multiple victims. A school resource officer said on Wednesday, another victim came forward alleging something happened to him or her before spring break.
At this point it's unclear how many incidents officials are looking into and what kind of timeline they are examining. Henrico Police have consulted with the commonwealth's attorney's office.
No criminal charges have been filed as of yet. Police said they are waiting for the results of the school's investigation before deciding if charges are even warranted. Dickerson told us there is no set timetable for that examination.
