Two charged in cockfighting bust in Spotsylvania

SPOTSYLVANIA, VA (WWBT) – Two Spotsylvania County residents were charged Monday on several felony and misdemeanor allegations stemming from an alleged cockfight.

Ellis Locklear, 36, and Tanya Williams, 28, were indicted on charges stemming from a March 3 search warrant which was executed at their Lawyers Road home. From a prior incident at the home, Animal Control Officers found evidence of cockfighting.

The indictments are:

-15 counts each of Cruelty to animals class 1 misdemeanors
-1 count each of Conspiracy, Felony    
-15 counts each of Promote animal fighting misdemeanors
-3 counts each of Keeping/possession of device for animal fighting, Felony
-15 counts each of Possession of animals used for fighting, Felony

The Commonwealth could have brought approximately 150 charges against the suspects.

A total of 321 fowl were confiscated from the home, most of the fowl were adults.  All the roosters had to be euthanized.  The hens were adopted by a local farm.

According to police, this is the largest seizure of its kind in the state of Virginia.  The Humane Society of the United States played an instrumental role during the search warrant.
