Prince Edward man drowns in Goochland pond

GOOCHLAND, VA (WWBT) - A 20 year old Prince Edward County man died Sunday afternoon in a private Goochland County farm pond after his canoe capsized tossing him and another man into the water.

According to Sheriff James L. Agnew, Donte D. Woodson, 20 of Piney Grove Road in Rice, and his friend launched their canoe around 5 p.m. Sunday evening at the pond off of Rock Castle Road in south central Goochland County.   According to witnesses, Woodson and a friend began rocking the canoe until it capsized in 13 feet of water about 40 feet from shore.

Woodson attempted to swim to the shore but began to struggle in the water. His companion tried to help him but he was unable to pull Woodson to shore and prevent him from going under the water. Other friends at the pond attempted to locate Woodson, but they became fatigued and were unable to find him.

Sheriff's deputies and Fire/Rescue units arrived within 7 minutes of the call and requested the assistance of the Henrico County dive team which arrived at 6:00 pm and located Woodson's body within an hour.  He was pronounced dead at the scene at and his body was transported to the Medical Examiner's Office in Richmond.

Neither man was wearing a flotation device.  The circumstances leading up to the accident are still under investigation.
