RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Professional baseball is back in Richmond and nearly 10,000 fans were on hand to celebrate the first home game.
Now, this Flying Squirrels franchise is definitely not your father's Richmond Braves. And that's OK.
I don't mean to imply the Braves weren't good for Richmond. I went to many games at the Diamond for years. But in recent years I became kind of a lapsed fan, not going as much.
I think with the physical decline of The Diamond amid the threats of leaving, the Richmond Braves gave up on Richmond. And we gave up on them. So this change is good.
The Flying Squirrels franchise understands that families and young adults want both the game and the entertainment value of wacky promotions, contests and general fan interaction. In this age of iPods, iPads, Twitter and watching TV while surfing the net, many people want non-stop engagement to enhance the game experience.
If the Squirrels reignite the successful tradition of professional baseball in Richmond, we may all demand a new ballpark before long. That would be OK too.
By the way, if you like your sports in High Definition, the highest definition is being there in person. See you there.
